“Don’t talk like that,” he said, his voice softening. “I’m involved now, and I can’t just leave you here by yourself…”
He trailed off, his gaze shifting away as he seemed to search for the right words.
“Where’s Denver? Shouldn’t your boyfriend be here at a time like this?”
Hadley remained silent. Calling Denver was out of the question, as he wasn’t really her boyfriend. Eric’s tone turned more demanding.
“Call Denver now. Get him over here.”
But a sense of unease crept through Hadley. She hesitated, reluctant to bother Denver, but Eric persisted.
“Make it quick!” His words were sharp. “You can either leave with me right now, or call Denver to come pick you up.”
Caught between those choices, Hadley knew what she had to do.
“Fine.”
With Eric’s intense stare locked on her, Hadley pulled her phone from her purse and dialed Denver’s number.
Denver answered almost immediately, his voice full of excitement.
“Hadley? It’s great to hear from you.”
Denver’s happiness was evident, even over the phone.
Feeling a pang of guilt, Hadley asked, “Denver, where are you right now? Can you come and get me?”
“Absolutely!” Denver responded without hesitation. “Just tell me where you are, and I’ll be right there.”
“I’m at the entrance of Poseidon’s Realm.”
“Got it.” Denver assured her. “Stay there. I’m coming to you.”
“Alright.”
Worried that Eric might pick up on her formal tone, Hadley kept her gratitude brief—couples usually didn’t bother with such formalities. After ending the call, Hadley turned to Eric.
“Denver is on his way.”
“Fine.”
Eric simply nodded before pulling out a cigarette, lighting it, and inhaling deeply as he waited.
Hadley was taken aback, expecting Eric to leave already.
Noticing her look, Eric exhaled a cloud of smoke.
“I’ll leave once Denver gets here.”
Hadley was surprised by his words. Was it possible for the usually arrogant Eric to show such consideration?
Shortly after, Denver arrived much sooner than Hadley had expected.
“Hadley!”
Denver quickly made his way to her.
“You’re here already?” Hadley asked in surprise. “I just ended the call.”
“I was already at Poseidon’s Realm,” Denver explained. He had been having a meal with clients but had hurried over immediately after her call, even though he had to hastily excuse himself.
