Chapter 30:
“Is it appropriate for someone dressed like that to be here?”
Hadley continued to eat, tuning out the murmurs. She hadn’t quite satisfied her appetite with the appetizers.
The soup was exceptionally tasty.
Setting her spoon aside, Hadley grasped the soup plate with both hands and savored a hearty sip.
“Unbelievable!”
“How rude!”
“We should leave.”
The women departed with looks of contempt.
After placing the plate back on the table, Hadley maintained a serene expression. The returning silence was a welcome relief.
Abruptly, the chair beside her was drawn back. Did one of those girls have a change of mind and come back?
Glancing up in surprise, Hadley saw Eric positioning himself at the table, his hand resting on its surface as he faced her.
Why had he come over? Did she do something to upset him again?
“Is there something you need?” Hadley inquired softly.
“No,” Eric replied, his expression tightening as he looked at her plate.
It was piled with food, showcasing her strong appetite.
He recalled her previously more modest eating habits.
Eric was uncertain about his reasons for approaching her. Perhaps it was driven by a sense of guilt.
Though he wasn’t fond of Hadley, circumstances had changed. This event was meant to welcome her, organized by Nyla.
Yet, Hadley hadn’t even been introduced properly to their guests.

“Ahem.” Eric cleared his throat, breaking the silence. “This evening has certainly been eventful. Linda has only recently entered the entertainment industry. It’s been a challenging journey for her, so…” His voice faded away.
Hadley grasped the situation. Was he attempting to make amends?
How interesting! Even in moments meant for apologies, Eric struggled to say the simple word “sorry” directly. What was the point of this conversation then?
With a slight smile, Hadley replied, “I’m aware. I overheard the discussions earlier.”
Her calm demeanor seemed to deepen Eric’s discomfort. He eventually pierced the awkward silence.
“You aren’t upset, are you?”
A blink and a light chuckle escaped Hadley, finding his worry somewhat amusing.
It appeared that indirect hostility wasn’t a trait bound by gender. Why should she engage further? Their relationship was a thing of the past, after all.
Embracing this thought, Hadley offered a reassuring smile and a shake of her head.
“No. You said it yourself, remember? I owe Linda that much.”
Her composure remained intact.
Eric saw no cause for concern.
