David picked it up. “Hello?”
“Did you keep her by your side?” Boris questioned. “Mr. Ellison, remember to keep work and personal life separate. Today’s meeting is important. Can you let her come over before getting‘ personal?”
“What are you talking about?”
“Huh?”
David narrowed his eyes. “Need me to repeat that?” He was confused by Boris’s implications.
“Hmm, how strange,” Boris’s voice was less confrontational. “Isn’t Caroline with you?”
“That’s my line.” Caroline had headed straight to the office after their call, not delaying even a second.
And Boris was asking about her now?Laughable!
Boris clarified. “She’s not here with me, I haven’t even seen her. I thought perhaps you had kept her, so I rushed to ask you.”
David’s expression grew concerned. If she wasn’t at home or the office, where was she?
“Could it be you’re also unaware of her whereabouts?” Boris speculated. “Is it possible she’s in trouble?”

Boris asserted confidently. “Then she’s run off.”
“Run off?”
“She must have run from your mistreatment. Mr. Ellison, your wife has fled.”
Furious, David slammed down the receiver. “William!”
“Yes, Mr. Ellison?”
“Locate Caroline,” he commanded sternly. “Find her, no matter what it takes!”
“Right away.”
David’s face turned steely.
Whatever Caroline was plotting, she’d face severe consequences once he found her!

In a chilling, abandoned building on the outskirts, where drafts swept through and rats squeaked, Caroline lay bound on the cold floor, her hair a mess, eyes clenched shut.
Nearby stood two men, one hefty and the other lean.
Jason kicked at her. “Hey, wake up. No playing dead; hurry up.”
Sam suggested, “Should we use water to wake her?”
“Go for it.”
Jason returned quickly with a bucket of water, splashing it onto Caroline.
