Chapter 49
A Night Under His Watch
# Finished
David stood motionless, his gaze fixed on the woman lying on the bed. He wanted nothing more than to strangle Caroline. And yet, here he was, feeding her water and porridge. If she died, wouldn’t that solve everything? At least I wouldn’t have to deal with this myself.
Tm so hungry… I want food…” Caroline murmured faintly. She tried to roll over and sit up but lacked the strength. Halfway there, she collapsed back into the soft bedding.
She curled up tightly, her back arched, her face deathly pale.
David’s expression darkened. “If you can still talk, you’re not dying. Get up and eat by yourself.
“Okay, okay,” Caroline mumbled but remained motionless, her eyes slowly closing again.
David’s lips thinned as his frustration grew. He could have left or summoned a servant, but he stayed. What’s wrong with me?
Before he realized it, he was sitting by her bedside, holding a spoon of porridge close to her lips. His actions had become strangely practiced, even testing the temperature with a gentle blow. Still, his voice was as cold as ever. “Open your mouth. Eat.”
Caroline weakly parted her lips.
The porridge was warm and slightly sweet, soothing her hunger and comforting her stomach.
David continued to feed her, and she obediently finished every spoonful. Before long, the bowl was empty, and Caroline fell into a deep sleep without ever opening her eyes.
When she woke, sunlight streamed through the windows. It was already noon.
Feeling much better, Caroline quickly sat up in bed.
“Did I faint?”
She tried to recall what happened the night before. She remembered walking out of the study and then… nothing. A glance at the clock made her gasp.
“Noon? Already?”
This is bad! Today was supposed to be her first official day at work, and now she’d missed it entirely. Would Mr. Boris think I was careless and unreliable?
Frustrated, Caroline jumped out of bed and dashed downstairs, skipping her morning routine entirely.
“Madam, Madam,” the butler called after her. “Why are you in such a rush?”
“I need to get to work!”
“But Mr. Ellison already informed the company,” the bler replied.
Caroline froze mid–step. “What did you just say?”
The butler caught up, pariting slightly. “You fainted from low blood sugar yesterday, Mr. Filison took m

Boris himself.
Caroline fixated on one word. “Took care of me?”

“Yes, Madam. From the moment you started receiving fluids, Mr. Ellison stayed with you in the master bedroom. When the doctor said you needed to cat, Mr. Ellison personally fed you porridge. He even woke up during the night to check on you….”
Caroline was stunned, unable to process this image.
That’s impossible. She shook her head firmly. “No way. There’s no way.”
To confirm she wasn’t dreaming, Caroline pinched her leg hard. Ouch!
Her doubts still lingered. She grabbed her phone and called David, her tone sharp. “Who told you to take over and call in for me? Why did you turn off my alarmn I need to work!”
David’s reply was icy. “You can die anywhere you want, just don’t die in the Ellison Group.”
