Where Were You on Our Wedding Night?
Caroline quickly stood up, covering her mouth, and rushed to the bathroom.
David watched her retreat in a panicked hurry, his brows slowly knitting together. What’s wrong with her?
Leaning over the sink, Caroline dry–heaved repeatedly but couldn’t bring anything up. The discomfort lingered, leaving her drained.
Several minutes passed before the nauseous sensation began to fade. She propped herself up against the sink, staring at her pale reflection in the mirror.

The realization made her complexion even paler.
And at that exact moment, David’s reflection appeared in the mirror behind her.
He stood tall in the doorway, his gaze sharp and calculating. “Dry heaving?”
“N–No,” Caroline stammered instinctively, terrified he might figure it out. “I just ate something weird this afternoon, and now my stomach feels off.”
David’s expression remained unreadable.
Caroline quickly added, “And the smell of your cigarette earlier made it worse. That’s all

“Of course,” Caroline said, feigning calm as she turned on the faucet to wash her hands. “Are you actually concerned about me? That’s a first.”
David’s piercing gaze remained fixed on her. “You know what happens when you lie to me.
“What would I have to lie about?” Caroline countered. have nothing to my name–no family, no one to rely on.”
She turned to face him, meeting his cold eyes. “It’s late Aren’t you going to rest?”
David’s lips pressed into a thin line. “Something just crossed my mind.”
Her heart skipped a beat. Has he figured it out? Does he remember the prenatal checkup report without my name on it? Or did he investigate the hospital?

If David discovered she wasn’t pure and was carrying another man’s baby, she’d face consequences too dire to imagine.
“On such a significant night, as the bride brought in to break bad luck, you didn’t even bother to visit me?” David pressed. “Yet, by morning, you suddenly barged in.
That morning, he’d just returned from a secret trip to the hotel when she caught him by surprise.
Even though security that night had been tight, barring her from visiting him, she clearly hadn’t intended to come at all.
The implications were entirely different.
Caroline explained. “No one arranged for me to see you. After the wedding car dropped me off, I stayed in the master bedroom the whole time and never left. Why are you suddenly asking about this now?”
Then, switching tactics, she added, “And by the way, I never asked you why, when I walked in the next morning, you were standing by the hospital bed about to put on an oxygen mask. Looked like you’d just come back from somewhere. Where were you?”
She remembered thinking she’d seen a ghost.
David shot her a cold glance and walked away without answering.
Caroline let out a sigh of relief. She’d dodged that one.
But the question lingered. If I was at the hotel that night, where did he go?
Unbidden, her mind conjured up images of the man from that night–his silhouette, his rough breathing,
And now, as she watched David’s retreating figure, it slowly overlapped with that man’s.
