David stood up.

The height difference forced Caroline to tilt her head to look at him. Good. That way, it is easier to hold back my tears.

“It’s not because Elizabeth is pregnant that I’m letting things go. It’s because…”

The words were on the tip of his tongue, but for a moment, he didn’t know how to explain.

Because he never planned to keep Elizabeth’s child. Because the only future he wanted was with her.

That was why he had chosen to forgive. It was his way of compensating Elizabeth.

After a pause, he changed his approach. “I have something to ask you.”

Caroline met his gaze, her eyes filled with nothing but disappointment.

David continued, unfazed by her silence. “Elizabeth is carrying my child. That’s a fact. And you–my wife, from your position, tell me honestly… do you want her to keep the baby?”

He was asking for her opinion.

Afraid she’d give him an immediate answer, he added, “Think carefully before you respond. Don’t just say something out of anger.”

David had already made up his mind. If Caroline said she doesn’t want the baby born, he would call the hospital that instant and arrange for an

bortion. But if she said she does want Elizabeth to keep it… Then what?

“Don’t say something in the heat of the moment,” he repeated. “Think it through.”

Her answer mattered.

For the first time in a long while, David felt nervous. His palms were sweating.

One sentence from her was enough to dictate his every move.

The tension between them thickened. The servants in the room had already slipped out, sensing the storm brewing. Here we go again–Mr. and Mrs. Ellison were about to have another explosive argument.

Caroline blinked, staring at him.

The man in front of her–stern, controlling, unyielding–was nothing like the vulnerable one she had heard last night.

She had no idea what had happened between him and Elizabeth at the hospital last night.

“There’s no why,” David said, his jaw clenched. “Whatever you say, I’ll do.”

If she told him to get rid of the child, he would.

If she told him to keep it–fine. He would keep it. For her.

Caroline froze.

She couldn’t believe what she had just heard. Whatever I say… he would do? How is that even possible?
