Boris smiled. “Don’t thank me just yet. I didn’t do anything. It was your husband who took the lead for you.”
Caroline froze. My husband? That would be David. He actually did something good? No way.
“Mr. Boris, you can’t just lie to flatter David in front of me,” Caroline scoffed. “There’s no way he cares about my well–being.”
Boris clicked his tongue twice. The way Caroline sees David is so dark. It seems David still has a long way to go in
winning her over.
“I’m not flattering him. I’m telling the truth,” Boris replied. “Yes, when the incident happened, David didn’t help you. In fact, he publicly humiliated you by throwing alcohol in your face. But privately, he didn’t go easy on Andrew.”
Caroline was skeptical.
“You’ve been married to him, so you know David’s character. That’s just how he is. Sometimes, I don’t even know what he wants.”
“Alright,” Caroline answered. “That does sound like something he’d do.”
Maybe David enjoyed humiliating her in public, but then secretly dealt with those who plotted against her. He would only allow himself to be the one to bully her.
Others weren’t allowed to do so.
Caroline belonged to David.
“Actually, him doing all that means he cares about you,” Boris lowered his voice. “Caroline, getting into David’s heart isn’t easy.”
“I don’t want to get into his heart, Mr. Boris.”
“But he’s let you in.”
Caroline countered, “Mr. Boris, are you saying that he’s already deeply in love with me?”
Boris answered with complete certainty. “Yes.”
This left Caroline speechless.
By the time she regained her senses, Boris had already turned and left.
Caroline stood at her desk, frozen, unable to process what had just been said.
David loves me? Could a man like him, someone as devilish as he is, really fall in
love with someone? And he’s fallen for me… What would it be like to be loved by David?
Caroline felt a chill run through her, and goosebumps rose on her arms.
Whether it was true or not, this was not a good thing for her.

“Caroline. Caroline?” Anna tugged at her. “Sit down, why are you just standing there?”
“Oh, alright…” Caroline stiffly sat back down at her desk.
“Looks like we might have to stay late today,” Anna said. “You’ve been on leave these past few days, so work has piled up. You didn’t even go to the lab. But it’s alright, I’ll stay and help you.”
“Thank you, Anna.”
“No problem. But Caroline, what did you do while you were on leave?”
“I wasn’t feeling well, so I stayed home to rest.”
Anna leaned in. “Was Mr. Ellison treating you badly again? Is he plotting something to make your life difficult?”
Not wanting to worry her best friend, Caroline shook her head. “No.”
“Ugh, I just wish I had the ability to stand up for you,” Anna said. “But if Mr. Ellison gets too much, don’t take it all on yourself. Let me know, and I’ll put everything on the line to stand up for you.”
Caroline took her hand. “You should keep your life, and stay with me tonight to work.”
