“That night, Nash never showed up, but a man entered your room,” David said. “Who do you think he was?”

“I don’t know, and I don’t want to know anymore.”

Maybe it was fate. She had neither the strength nor the will to investigate. She only wanted to give birth and raise her children.

A sudden thought crossed David’s mind, and he asked more intently, “Which hotel did the Brooks family send you to? What room?”

With that lead, his subordinates could track down the man.

Whoever took advantage of that situation, whoever had the audacity, would not be getting away with it.

Caroline was caught off guard. “What?”

“Did you not understand the question?”

“No, I…” She bit her lip. “I don’t know anything. From the moment I got into the car, I had no control over my fate. And I was unconscious. By the time I woke up, I was already lying in bed, completely unaware of where I was.”

David pressed further. “What about when you left?”

“They took me away. The hotel’s hallways all looked the same, with identical decoration, no distinctive signs. I couldn’t tell.”

So, Caroline had no idea which hotel or room it had happened in.

Only the Brooks family knew.

But they wouldn’t tell the truth.

Then there was Nash. He knew, too.

But Caroline no longer wanted anything to do with him.

“What’s the point of digging this up now?” she murmured. “None of it matters anymore. I’ve already fallen to this point. I’ve never been able to live on my own terms. It’s all because my parents abandoned me, leaving me an orphan. And now the world is abandoning me, too.”

She sighed, her long lashes trembling slightly.

David slowly raised his hand, as if to gently pat her head.

He was feeling sorry for her.

The emotion spread through him, uncontrollable, no longer something he could suppress at will.

Caroline didn’t notice his raised hand. She merely closed her eyes and sat still in the back

seat.

She drummed her fingers anxiously against the steering wheel, then slammed the horn several times, startling the birds from the trees.

“I thought this time, everything was foolproof. But what happened? Not only is Caroline perfectly fine, but now Mr. Ellison is siding with her? I need to ask Julia what the hell happened last night. Why did everything change overnight?”

Elizabeth grabbed her phone and dialed.

“Hello?” Julia answered. “Why are you calling me? Aren’t you afraid of being found out?”

“You’re not so careless that someone would easily trace your contacts, are you?”

Besides, David had already checked the surveillance footage. He knew. There was no point in Elizabeth hiding it anymore.

“I’ll get straight to the point,” Elizabeth snapped. “How did you fail? You had everything arranged! What the hell happened?”

Julia didn’t bother hiding anything and recounted the entire event in detail.

“That’s pretty much it,” Julia said. “Since the child isn’t Nash’s, it has nothing to do with me anymore. All I need to do now is keep an eye on him so Caroline doesn’t lure him away.”

“You! Why didn’t you act faster?! You were so close!”

“I’m actually glad I was slow,” Julia scoffed. “Otherwise, the baby really would be gone, and Caroline would fight me to the death. Then what?”
