“So…. I had even less reason to doubt you,” Julia explained. “I’m sorry, Nash. I should have trusted you!”
Nash pressed his lips tightly together, giving no response.
Julia was on the verge of tears. “Please don’t blame me, Nash. I really did this for you, for our future! I had no selfish intentions–I just love you too much.
“You wanted to save Caroline, to buy her freedom–you could have told me. I would have supported you. But you kept it from me, and I thought… I thought you still had feelings for her, that something had happened between you two, so I lost control…”
“Mr. Ellison! Mr. Ellison!” Julia turned toward David. “Since this child isn’t Nash’s, then it has nothing to do with us! Let’s just… pretend today never happened. A complete misunderstanding! The baby is still alive, so how you deal with it is up to you and Caroline. I won’t interfere!”
Julia was both terrified and relieved. Just moments ago, she had been so desperate to get rid of that child. And now, she was just as relieved that she hadn’t succeeded. If I had actually done it, I would have been in deep trouble!
“Let’s go.” Julia grabbed Nash’s arm, tugging at him. “This isn’t our problem anymore. We need to leave- now.”
Nash scolded her sharply, “You caused this whole mess, and now you think you can just walk away? Julia, you’ve made a huge mistake!”
“I… I didn’t even succeed, did I? Besides, if not for me, everyone would still think the baby was yours! If you refused to explain, imagine how much trouble you’d be in!”
Caroline curled into herself, her mind in chaos, as if it were about to explode.
Then-
A pair of polished leather shoes appeared in her blurred vision.
David lifted her effortlessly into his arms.
She lay curled up against his chest, looking so small, so fragile.
Caroline kept her eyes shut.
“You heard them, didn’t you, David?” she said weakly. “It wasn’t Nash who forced the Brooks family to sell me. They lied. They framed him. He bought me to save me… and he never touched me.”
She had spent so long resenting Nash, thinking he had violated her.
But she had hated the wrong person.
All the suffering she endured–none of it was caused by Nash.
Caroline pondered. If anything, Nash had done his best for me. He could have stood by and done nothing. He didn’t have to buy me. He didn’t have to save me. But he did it anyway, out of whatever was left of our past. And me? How did
I see him all this time? I was so small–minded. So blind. I can’t even stand myself right now.

Caroline let out a bitter laugh. “He saved me, David. He’s my benefactor. How could I let him carry the blame for something he didn’t do?”
Even though she was barely holding herself together, even though she was trapped in this nightmare–she could no longer drag Nash down with her.
With that thought, Caroline lifted her head from David’s chest.
“Nash, thank you for buying me. For saving me. But from now on, my life has nothing to do with you,” she said, her voice devoid of emotion. “And I… I was wrong. I misjudged you.”

Before Nash could say another word, she cut him off sharply.
“Our past, whatever it was, ends here. Let’s put an end to it.”
