Caroline cautiously moved backward. But it was futile–each step she took, Elizabeth followed, closing the distance.
“This is such a perfect opportunity, Caroline. How could I possibly let it slip by? No one’s going to help you, and no one’s coming to save you. Right now, you’re like meat on my chopping block, ready for me to carve as I please! In this grand Ellison residence, who would dare to protect you? Even if Mr. Ellison were here, he might just join me in teaching you a lesson. How does it feel to cry out for help with no one to answer, huh?”
Elizabeth’s fingers landed on Caroline’s cheek, her long nails lightly gliding across her skin.
She wasn’t pressing hard, but it sent a chill down Caroline’s spine, leaving her feeling uneasy.
“They say you shouldn’t hit someone’s face, but Caroline, I’m going to do just that,” Elizabeth said, her smile smug and triumphant. “I want everyone to see the marks on your face. And how will you explain them to the people who care about you?”
With those words, Elizabeth’s nail suddenly pressed down, dragging sharply across Caroline’s cheek.
A thin, bloody scratch appeared instantly.
“Hiss-” Caroline inhaled sharply in pain.
“What a pampered little lady you are, Caroline. Can’t even handle a little pain?” Elizabeth taunted. “This is just the beginning.”
“Elizabeth!”
“Oh, still so full of energy, shouting my name like that. You’ve got more fight left in you than I thought,” Elizabeth said mockingly.
Her nails continued to hover menacingly over Caroline’s face, waiting for the perfect moment to strike again. The nails were long and sharp, like claws ready to tear through flesh.
“Tell me, where should I scratch next?” Elizabeth mused. “Should I mark both sides for symmetry, or just one side so you can cover it with your hair? Which do you prefer? Since we’re sisters, maybe I’ll spare you a little and only mark one side. That way, you can still face people with a bit of dignity, and if anyone asks, you can make up some excuse. With that seductive face of yours and your unyielding attitude, no wonder Mr. Ellison finds you revolting. Of course, someone like you, who’s always been stubborn and unwilling to bend, wouldn’t understand how to act submissive. Maybe it’s because you’re an orphan clinging to that pitiful little shred of self–respect you have left.”
Elizabeth’s laughter was full of delight–she’d waited so long for this moment to take her revenge on Caroline.
Caroline tried to turn her head away, but Elizabeth grabbed her hair, forcing her to face her directly.
“Why are you dodging? I’m only using my hands; I haven’t even brought out any tools yet!”
Caroline glared at her. “What exactly do you want?”
“I’ll do whatever I please. Why the rush? The night is long–I have all the time in the world to play with you.”
But Caroline wasn’t one to take such abuse quietly. Without warning, she spat directly at Elizabeth.

“Ah!” Elizabeth shrieked, completely caught off guard. She hadn’t expected Caroline to spit at her and failed to dodge in time.
The spit landed squarely on Elizabeth’s face.
“You vile woman!” Elizabeth screamed, wiping her face in disgust. She raised her hand and slapped Caroline hard across the face. “Filthy!”
The slap was so forceful that Caroline’s head jerked to the side, leaving a bright red handprint on her cheek. Combined with the earlier scratch, her face was now swollen and battered.
Elizabeth furiously wiped her face, her expression twisting with rage. “Oh, you dare to fight back, Caroline? You’re finished! Tonight, I’ll destroy you!”
But Caroline wasn’t one to back down. I couldn’t fight David, but Elizabeth? That is a different story…
