David didn’t push her away. Seeing this, Elizabeth leaned further into his embrace.

Mr. Ellison’s arms were so broad, so warm. Elizabeth thought. She had to claim this space for herself and leave no chance for Caroline to get close.
David kept his gaze lowered, his deep eyes giving no hint of what he was thinking.
Elizabeth was the one who had always considered his best interests, the one who had once saved him from the effects of the drug and given him her most precious first time.
And Caroline, from the beginning, she had schemed, deceived, and threatened him at every turn. The answer to who deserved his protection was clear.
David raised his eyes slightly, glancing at Caroline.
Caroline felt a chill run through her. She met his gaze for two seconds before turning away. A sense of dread crept over her.
Sure enough, David’s cold voice followed. “Why are you just standing there? Hmm?”
Caroline bit her lip. “If I don’t stand here, should I beg for mercy instead?”
“At least you know your place,” he said, tilting his chin. “Elizabeth has done nothing wrong. The one at fault is you. Understand?”
She didn’t understand. And she didn’t want to.
But David wouldn’t let her off that easily. He spoke plainly, leaving no room for argument. “So, Caroline, it’s time for you to apologize to Elizabeth and ask for her forgiveness.”
Caroline’s lashes trembled slightly. “What did I do wrong that requires her forgiveness?”
His voice was commanding and domineering. “If I say you’re wrong, then you’re wrong!”
“Oh…”
Caroline let out a soft, bitter laugh.
If he decided she was wrong, she had no choice but to bear the blame.
She looked at him and asked, “David, you can’t even bother coming up with a proper excuse to justify my supposed wrongdoing? Are you just outright declaring me guilty now?”
“You want reasons? I have plenty. Take your pick.”
“Whichever one you want to give, I’ll listen,” Caroline replied. “At least make it sound believable, so I can feel like I might actually be at fault.”
David raised his hand, brushing aside Elizabeth’s hair to reveal the bruise on her forehead.
It was swollen and dark purple–a testament to how hard Elizabeth had struck the ground earlier.

David fixed his gaze on Caroline. “Do you understand now?”
He was clearly siding with Elizabeth, ready to stand up for her and use every means to torment and humiliate Caroline.
Caroline stood straight and tall. “Understood.”
“Good. Now apologize and accept your punishment properly.”
Yet Caroline remained motionless.
“Mr. Ellison…” Elizabeth feigned concern. “This doesn’t seem appropriate. Let’s just let it go. After all, even though we’re not related by blood, we’ve been sisters for over twenty years. I don’t want to make a big deal out of it.”
To everyone’s surprise, Caroline nodded. “Alright, if that’s what you want.”
She turned and began to walk away.
Elizabeth froze. What? Just like that?
But she couldn’t let Caroline leave so easily–not when this was her best chance to flaunt her victory.
“Caroline!” Elizabeth quickly caught up to her, grabbing her arm. “We’ve been sisters for so long. I don’t want us to turn against each other because of Mr. Ellison. Just apologize to Mr. Ellison, get rid of the child, and things can still be salvaged. There’s still a way forward…”
