“I couldn’t bear to deceive Mr. Ellison. I love him, and I can’t stand seeing him left in the dark. You’ve hidden the truth time and time again, and I just can’t watch it anymore. Mr. Ellison is such a good man. He has the right to know the truth. Caroline, I was wrong. Let me go with you to terminate the pregnancy, and you can start fresh with Mr. Ellison, alright?”

Caroline closed her eyes for a moment.

She had already guessed… David must be standing right behind her.

That was why Elizabeth had suddenly decided to put on such a dramatic performance. How could Caroline possibly stop Elizabeth’s theatrics?

Sure enough, a faint breeze brushed past her, carrying the scent of an elegant men’s cologne. David walked straight by her, the hem of his suit brushing against her cheek.

He bent down and helped Elizabeth to her feet.

“Mr. Ellison…” Elizabeth’s face was streaked with tears. “It’s my fault. Blame me for everything…”

David’s gaze landed on the wound on her forehead. “Did you just hit your head?”

“Yes,” Elizabeth replied. “But, Mr. Ellison, don’t blame Caroline. I did it willingly; she didn’t force me. I… I kidnapped her out of anger back then and exposed her pregnancy. I was wrong, and I should bow and confess my guilt to her.”

She lifted her tearful, pitiful face to David, her expression soft and fragile, evoking sympathy.

David simply said, “You’re not at fault.”

Elizabeth was momentarily stunned, then her face lit up with delight. “Really? Mr. Ellison, does that mean… you forgive me?”

“I just arrived too early that day,” David said, his tone calm and low. “If I’d come a bit later, it would’ve been just right.”

Caroline stood silently, listening to their exchange, her heart already numb.

Back when she had been kidnapped, if David had arrived even a moment later, she would have been assaulted by the two men. Yet now he said… he should have come later.

The gratitude she had felt for his timely arrival was now replaced by an unbearable ache. David knew exactly how to wound her.

Pain? What is pain? She had been hurt so many times that she no longer felt it.

Elizabeth leaned into David’s chest, taking advantage of the moment. “So, Mr. Ellison, you don’t blame me anymore, right? You’re willing to see me again, and I don’t have to stay in seclusion anymore, do I?”

“Yes.”

With his confirmation, Elizabeth finally smiled.

She had successfully driven a wedge between David and Caroline. From now on, David would be hers

Elizabeth played the victim perfectly.

With this act, she had completely turned the tables.

All her previous actions–kidnapping Caroline, exposing her pregnancy, revealing her past–were suddenly justified. They weren’t out of jealousy or malice but because Elizabeth had been looking out for David.

How ridiculous.

And now, Elizabeth appeared to be on the moral high ground.

David spoke indifferently. “You’ve been through a lot during this time.”

“It’s nothing,” Elizabeth replied, her face filled with adoration. “As long as it’s for your sake, I’m willing to endure anything.”

She clung tightly to David’s arm, pouring out her affection.
