Elizabeth quietly left through the hidden back door and returned to the Brooks residence to continue discussing the next steps with Samantha.
Having set foot on this path, there was no turning back. They had to see it through to the end.
A black, luxurious Maybach glided smoothly along the quiet streets of the early morning.
David sat in the back seat, one hand propped against his temple. Though he appeared relaxed and indifferent, his eyes were filled with icy malice. Caroline was asleep beside him.
Her head rested against the car window as she dozed, caught in a hazy half–sleep. In her dreams, she thought she was still in the hospital, with Harper by her side, comforting her and allowing her to sleep peacefully.
A sudden honk startled her awake. Her eyes flew open, her drowsiness instantly vanishing. Caroline sat up straight, her gaze darting around warily, though the lingering haze of sleep still softened her expression.
“Heh…”
The sound of a mocking chuckle reached her ears, and she turned to see the man sitting next to her.
David!
She immediately shrank back, pressing herself tightly against the car door as she looked at him with fear and helplessness. “You… you…
How am I in the car? Where is Harper? Where is the doctor?
As she moved, a sharp pain shot through her fingers. Caroline winced and inhaled sharply but didn’t dare cry out.
She didn’t have the right to express her pain because no one would care. David would only relish the opportunity to stomp on her injured hand, making the pain even worse.
Caroline kept silent, too afraid to speak, uncertain of what he might do to her next. She felt utterly powerless.
“You’re awake?” David said coolly. “Sleeping so soundly did you really think I couldn’t deal with you?”
The fact that she could sleep peacefully in his presence genuinely surprised him. Having Harper’s support clearly made a difference,
Caroline hunched her shoulders, unsure how to respond. She cautiously glanced out the car window.
The car turned a corner and entered the Ellison residence, coming to a stop beside the garden.
The sky was already bright, with the fiery sun slowly rising above the horizon. The sunlight was blindingly intense.
“Mr. Ellison, we’re home,” the driver said. “I’ll take my ave now.”
The driver got out of
the car carefully, closing the door quietly as though he feared making too much

“I… I’ll get out too,” Caroline said quickly, reaching for the car door handle.
But the door wouldn’t budge. It was locked.
Her heart sank in despair. Being stuck in such a confined space with David felt like pure torment.

“Caroline, you’re impressive,” David leaned back against the seat. “Again and again, you’ve schemed against me–and succeeded. You’re the first to pull that off.”
She bit her lip. “I just want to protect my child. It’s a mother’s instinct.”
“You think surviving last night means you’re in the clear?”
David’s tone dripped with contempt.
With just a flick of his fingers, he could dictate Caroline’s fate.
And every time he did, she had to fight tooth and nail to resist. Caroline knew full well that things wouldn’t simply end here.
Trying to protect her child from David’s grasp was nearly impossible. But no matter how hard it was, she had to try.
“David,” Caroline said firmly, “if you’re dead set on taking my child’s life, then you might as well kill me too. Once I’m dead, the child will be gone as well. Saves you the trouble. One life, three deaths–it’s that simple.”
Every word from him was laced with cruelty. “No. I’ll kill your child first, then take my time ending you.”
Caroline knew he wasn’t bluffing. He would follow through.
