“Hmm?” Caroline asked, sensing the silence and growing curious as David didn’t respond right away.
“You’d better always be on my side,” he said. “The only outcome for those who betray me is—”

As his wife, Caroline was with him day and night, sharing meals and a bed, making it easy for her to take action if she wished.
But David never guarded against her. Partly because he thought she didn’t have the courage, and partly because he was too confident, believing she could never hurt him.

“Who should I be worried about?” David narrowed his eyes. “Hmm?”
“Nothing.” Caroline shook her head. “I’m just curious… what do you see in Elizabeth?”

Caroline didn’t understand.

David didn’t elaborate. Instead, he pulled his hand back and turned to walk toward the master bedroom.
Her curiosity piqued, Caroline chased after him. “You can’t just leave it hanging like that. Finish your story… it’s annoying to leave people hanging.”
He quickened his pace. Caroline sped up to catch him.
Suddenly, David stopped, and Caroline didn’t notice in time, colliding directly into his broad back.

Her nose hit the firm, muscular back, causing a sharp pain that made her eyes water.

But in the next moment, David’s arms tightened around her waist, lifting her off her feet and pushing her onto the bed. She landed in the soft feather comforter with a bounce.
What was he doing this time? Caroline pushed at him with all her strength. “Hey, I won’t ask anymore, okay? Whatever night it was, it’s none of my business! Forget I ever said anything! I’m going to sleep!”
“You sleep.”
But with him acting like this, how could I sleep
? Before Caroline could react, David flipped onto his side, closing his eyes.
She scrambled to get up, planning to return to the sofa.
“Come back,” David said lazily.
“Huh?”
“Sleep next to me.”
Caroline shook her head vigorously. “The sofa’s fine.”
What is he playing at? Sleeping in the same bed with him? Who knew what could happen next!
Then, she suddenly remembered something and glanced nervously at the door. Is Harper’s spy still watching outside? Why is David suddenly making this request?
It was so strange.
David didn’t stop her; he simply said, “Either sleep next to me, or sleep on the floor.”
“I’ll sleep on the floor.”
