Chapter 390
Back then, he’d even boasted to Effie about it, grinning with such smug pride that now, just thinking about it, he felt utterly embarrassed.
It had been Effie who helped him, yet he’d strutted around in front of her as if he’d done something great.
Why hadn’t Effie called him out on it at the time?
“Hey! Watch out!”
Suzan noticed they needed to turn, but Mitchell just kept driving straight, nearly crashing into the guardrail.
Suzan’s shrill cry jolted Mitchell out of his thoughts.
He slammed on the brakes, bringing the car to a screeching halt just in time.
Thank God there wasn’t a car behind them-otherwise, there would’ve been a pile-up.
Suzan was still reeling from shock. Her stomach throbbed in pain-the seatbelt had dug sharply into her during the sudden stop.
She felt something strange, a sensation of something dropping inside her. Reaching down, she touched her abdomen and her hand came away sticky and
warm.
Oh no.
She grabbed for Mitchell’s hand, her voice trembling. “My stomach-it hurts. Something’s wrong.”
Mitchell turned, and the sight of Suzan’s hand covered in blood made his heart drop, his face going white with terror.
“Wh-what do I do?” he stammered, barely able to get the words out.
“Take me to the hospital!” Suzan managed, before the pain overwhelmed her and she passed out.
Mitchell snapped into action, flooring the gas pedal and racing to the hospital. When they finally arrived, he scooped Suzan into his arms and barreled through the doors, shouting, “Clear the way! Move! Somebody help!”
Seeing the two of them covered in blood, the people in the lobby scattered out of the way in shock.
Suzan was rushed into the emergency room.
“Her again? She was just in here not long ago, and now this. Kids these days- don’t even care about their lives,” one nurse muttered under her breath.
Lionel heard about Suzan’s accident and rushed over with Yvette. The sight of Mitchell soaked in blood made Lionel’s heart skip a beat.
“Where’s Suzan? Is she all right?” he demanded.
Mitchell could only point helplessly toward the emergency room doors.
Lionel stood vigil outside, silently praying that Suzan would pull through.
Soon, Shepard and Vera arrived. With Lionel-her “big brother”—there, Vera no longer bothered to play nice with Mitchell.
She rounded on him immediately. “Mitchell, what happened? Why is Suzan in the ER again? Did you do something to her?”
Mitchell knew this was his fault. If he hadn’t zoned out behind the wheel, none of this would have happened.
“I’m sorry… I—I—”
“So it was you!” Vera snapped, slapping Mitchell hard across the face.
He didn’t dodge-he knew he deserved it. The slap landed, leaving a stinging mark.
Just then, Adeline walked in and caught the scene-Mitchell standing there, taking Vera’s slap without protest.
It was as if that blow had struck Adeline’s own heart.
Her eyes blazed as she stormed over. “What gives you the right to hit him?” she shouted.
Vera jumped at Adeline’s fury, but
quick glance at Lionel gave her courage. She shot back, “Your rson did this! He put my daughter back in the ER. A slap is getting off easy!”
Adeline turned to Mitchell, her voice low and tight. “Is that true? Did you do what she said?”
Mitchell nodded slightly. The memory of Suzan’s bloodied hand still haunted him -he could hardly focus.
“You-!” Adeline clenched her teeth in anger. “You’re unbelievable!”
If Mitchell weren’t her son, she might have slapped him herself.
How could he have been so reckless?
With Suzan’s status now, and the two families about to unite, this incident could only bring trouble to the Lloyds-nothing good could come of it.
