Chapter 178
“Let go.” His voice was cold as he shot Suzan a warning glance.
Suzan bit down hard on her lip, eyes brimming with tears. Her voice trembled with hurt. “After everything I’ve done for you-and now that I’m pregnant-this is how you treat me?”
Mitchell let out a short, mocking laugh, his gaze filled with scorn. “Suzan, don’t act like you’re some kind of martyr. Who was it that climbed into my bed, even though you knew I was dating Effie? Who seduced whom?”
He leaned in, words as sharp as knives. “Who strutted around in front of Effie, rubbing it in her face? And now you want to play the victim?”
Suzan’s face drained of color, her fingers trembling.
“What’s wrong? Nothing to say?” Mitchell looked down at her, sneering. “Did I get anything wrong?”
Suzan’s chest heaved, her nails digging deep into her palms.
Leave? How could she just walk away now? She’d schemed so hard to get this far-there was no way she’d give it all up without a fight.
She quickly softened her tone, her voice pleading. “Mitchell, how can you say that about me? I worry about you because I love you.”
Mitchell harshly shook her hand off.
Suzan lost her balance, stumbling and hitting the edge of a chair as she fell to the floor.
Suddenly, she clutched her stomach.
“Aah—” Suzan cried out, her face turning ghostly pale, cold sweat beading on her forehead.
“Mitchell, my stomach… it hurts… so much…”
Mitchell froze, panic flickering in his eyes. “What’s wrong with you?”
He’d only shaken her off-how could things get this serious?
Suzan curled up on the carpet, her fingers clutching the fabric of her dress so tightly her knuckles whitened.
She lifted her face, voice shaking, tears and sweat mingling on her cheeks. “Mitchell… it really hurts… the baby… our baby…”
A bright red stain slowly spread across the pale fabric of her dress.
Mitchell’s
eyes widened in shock, fear flooding his features.
He rushed forward, scooping Suzan into his arms. “Hang in there, Suzan! I’m taking you to the hospital!”
Dammit.
Mitchell snapped out of his rage in an instant.
Why did he have to push her like that?
He knew she’d been on edge ever since she got pregnant, desperate for
reassurance.
Suzan lay weakly in his arms, lips chalk-white. But as Mitchell hurried out the door, she tilted her face away-just enough to hide the small, triumphant smirk curling at her lips.
She knew Mitchell all too well-it just took the right push.
She’d gone all in, and it was working.
As Mitchell rushed Suzan outside, the others in the house stood frozen in shock.
Mrs. Lloyd’s voice was frantic. “Mitchell! Where are you going? What’s wrong with Suzan?”
She’d caught a glimpse of red on Suzan’s dress.
No-surely Suzan wasn’t bleeding?
How could this be happening?
Her precious grandchild!
“Drive faster!” Mitchell barked at the driver, glancing down at the blood spreading across Suzan’s dress, his own hands shaking uncontrollably.
The emergency room lights flickered above as Mitchell slumped onto a bench, his suit stained with Suzan’s blood.
Regret crashed over him.
It wasn’t until he saw the blood that he realized he did care about this child.
He’d been a terrible excuse for a father; how could he have been so cruel?
He cursed himself, silently praying for Suzan and the baby to pull through. After a while, the doctor came out, his expression grave. “Mr. Lloyd, the baby is safe for now, but the mother’s emotional state is unstable. She’ll need to be monitored in the hospital.”
Mitchell let out a long breath, relief washing over him. Thank God. Disaster had been narrowly avoided.
