“It’s rare that both of you are home today. I guess I picked the right time to visit,” Harper said, turning to David with a warm smile. “Come sit down.”
Caroline expected David to refuse. It was already midday, and he had an entire company waiting for him, undoubtedly with a pile of urgent matters to handle.
But to her surprise, David nodded. “Alright.”
He pulled out a chair and sat down–right beside her.
His presence was strong, his aura overwhelming. Caroline instinctively shifted, trying to put some distance between them.
David, however, casually stretched an arm over the back of her chair, leaning slightly toward her.
To an outsider, they looked like a perfectly affectionate couple.
Harper took in the scene with amusement, his smile deepening. “David, did you stay home today just to keep Caroline company?”
“Yes.”
“She looks a little worn out. Has she not been sleeping well? Something on her mind?”
“Yes,” David responded smoothly. “That’s why I decided to put work on hold and spend more time with her. Maybe it’ll help improve her mood.”
Caroline went quiet. How does he lie so effortlessly? And with such conviction, without even a hint of guilt.
Caroline couldn’t take it anymore and blurted out, “You’ve never stayed home like this before. The way you’re talking, you make yourself sound like some devoted husband.”
David didn’t even hesitate. “There’s a first time for everything. And after the first, there will be a second, a third, and countless more.”
“Oh, listen to you. You almost sound sincere.”
“Do I?” He leaned in a little closer. “Then should I sing it to you?”
David was staying home with Caroline today.
But did she believe his reasoning? Not in the slightest.
For a brief moment, something unfamiliar flickered in his chest.
So this is what it feels like–to not be taken seriously. To not be believed or cared about.
But he brushed it off.
What he didn’t realize was that in the future, this feeling would only grow stronger–so strong it would consume his rationality, take over his thoughts, and bury itself deep in his heart.

Harper, oblivious to the undercurrents between them, beamed at their exchange. At this rate, I’ll have a grandchild in no time!
“Good, very good.” Harper nodded in satisfaction. “As long as you two are happy, I’m relieved. I know young people value their freedom and don’t like being disturbed, so I try not to visit the Ellison residence too often. But when there’s news about Caroline’s pregnancy, I want to be the first to know. Not just me–your grandfather is waiting for that day too.”
Caroline opened her mouth to speak, but David beat her to it.
“There will be good news,” he said, his tone carrying an unmistakable promise.
To Harper, it was a guarantee–one that put him even more at ease.
But Caroline’s heart clenched.
Madam Harper has always treated me well–like her own daughter. Even now, with David in power, wealthy and influential, she never once looked down on me. Instead, she was the first to push for our marriage, never caring about my background or status. She meant well. On the surface, this marriage should have been a good match, a lucky opportunity. To the outside world, I married up, stepping into a life of luxury. But only I know the bitterness hidden beneath it all.
“Mom, about the baby…” Caroline bit her lip, gathering all her courage. Her expression hardened with determination. “I need to talk to you. Honestly.”
She didn’t want to hide it anymore. She needed to say it. She was already pregnant, but the child wasn’t David’s.
This marriage… was never going to last.
