But she didn’t believe for a second that Nash had forced the Brooks family to sell her out.
That was just one of Samantha’s lies.
Yet her belief didn’t matter.
What mattered was whether David believed it.

“Caroline.” His voice suddenly broke the silence. “Have you made up your mind? Are you keeping the baby
She tightened her fists, carefully thinking through her response before speaking. “I only just found out the child is Nash’s. I think—
“I asked if you’re getting rid of it!”
David snapped, cutting her off before she could continue.
He flicked away his cigarette and turned to face her, his entire presence exuding aggression.
Caroline froze, her breath catching.
“Now that you know the child is Nash’s, does that make you even more reluctant to give it up?” His voice was quiet but edged with accusation. “Is that what this is about?”
She shook her head. “I already told you–I don’t care who the father is.”
“But Nash was the one who had you first, wasn’t he? He was the one who took that from you. Don’t tell me you didn’t feel at least a little relieved–maybe even a bit grateful?”
“No,” Caroline answered without hesitation. “David, I hate him too.”
She hated that he had saved her, yet refused to set her free–that he insisted on having her, yet never took any precautions.
She hated that he offered no future, yet kept appearing in her life, dragging her back into his world.
H not for this child, everything would have been much simpler.
“You despise him, yet you insist on giving birth to his child?” David took a step closer, looking down at her. “You’d even risk your life to protect it?”
Caroline lifted her chin, meeting his gaze. “I just…”

“You just want a child. David finished for her. “I told you, Caroline–we can have one together.”
Hearing it again, Caroline felt a wave of disbelief wash over her.
She murmured, “Our child?”
It sounded too unreal. Too unreal.
“David, we…” She let out a bitter chuckle. “How could we possibly have a child?”

David raised his hand, lightly wrapping his fingers around her throat without applying pressure. But with just a slight squeeze, Caroline would be gasping for air
He bent slightly, bringing his gaze level with hers. “Or do you think my child wouldn’t be as important as the one you’re carrying now?”
“That’s not what I mean,” Caroline said, voicing the doubt in her heart. “I just… do you really want to have a child with me?”
“Of course.”
David’s response was firm, without a moment of hesitation.
“Our engagement has nothing to do with love,” she reminded him. “There’s no future for us.”
Caroline had never allowed herself to hope for more. Even with Harper’s favor, she knew she could never truly hold onto the position of Mrs. Ellison.
